“Keith,” I hissed, keeping my voice down as I skidded down the grassy hill towards where I’d seen his shadow vanish, the wings of my Bane form pulling on my shoulders and back.

I hadn’t considered what I’d do if I couldn’t find Keith. My whole plan hinged on finding him.

“Keith,” I whispered again, scanning the hill as I rushed down it, praying the immense demon army didn’t notice the grass swaying and giving away my path. “Where the hell are you? It’s Kar—”

I nearly screamed when the tall grass in front of me parted, and a massive shadow fell over me. Terrifyingly sharp teeth bared in my face, so many of them that it was a Cheshire Cat grin, that my bones would be crushed the second it closed its hungry jaws around me.

I scrambled back, but I caught myself before I could run the opposite direction, registering the orange eyes and the particular stripe pattern on the creature’s face. The huge mouth was parted in a big, toothy grin, not because I was about to be mincemeat.

“Keith!” I hissed, hurrying closer so I could lower my voice. “You scared the shit out of me.”

He butted his big head against my shoulder, a quiet purr rumbling through his body.

“I have a plan,” I rushed out, adrenaline making me fast and shaky. “But I need you to create a distraction and get everyone away from the massive kitty. Can you do that?”

He replied by licking me from shoulder to temple, until I was dripping slobber.

“Love you, too, Keith,” I huffed with a smile, waiting until he turned to wipe the goop off my face. If my hair hadn’t already been flattened to my head, it was now truly horrific. Not that it would matter how my hair looked if one of those commanders got their hands on me.

Paranoid, I threw a swift glance behind me. But there was no red demon creeping up on me.

“No,” I murmured, following Keith’s big body as he slunk through the grass, still purring, “you’re just walking into a field full of them.”

But it was too late to back out now. I was covered in Keith’s drool of gratitude and when the creature cried out again, I couldn’t help but wonder if it was like Keith, if this feline had a two-legged form that could speak and think and feel.

Even if it couldn’t, this was wrong. Chains rattled when the commander pulled on them, and I tended my body, pulling my wings tight to my back. It was a horrific sound. Unforgivable.

Keith paused near the bottom of the incline to look back at me, his ears flat to his head but his gaze searching. I nodded.

I’m fine, and still on board with this insane rescue mission.

His eyes flashed with excitement, inappropriate given we were about to put ourselves in the middle of a demon army ten thousand strong, but I couldn’t deny that my fire was leaping with excitement, too.

Good. I’d need it for what I was about to do.
